English – Irish – Norwegian – European

I live in Norway in a rural area, sparsely populated, far away from any large city. I speak Norwegian. I understand some English, some German, but, unfortunately, no Irish. I am a Norwegian. Am I a European too? What makes me a European?

To be a responsible citizen you have to take care about the environment, dont just throw trash on the ground, but in the trashcan. You can take part in different organisations. You can do some community work, like serving food to homeless people. You can help people with different things. You have to have respect for others and their property.

What do you think is a responsible citizen?

Do you know any any person that has inspired you?

If you want to be a Norwegian, what shall you do? If you have Norwegian citizenship, are you a Norwegian? What do you think? Do you think of it in a different way?
I think that a Norwegian is a Norwegian, regardless where in the world he is. If I moved to England, I would still think of me as a Norwegian. and if there came a African boy where I live, with a Norwegian citizenship, I would still think of him as an African.
but I think that everybody is the same.

I think that to be a Norwegian means that you were born there or have lived there for a while. I think that if you grow up in Norway you are a Norwegian.
Even though Norway is’nt a member of EU, we share some values.

What do you think it means to me a European?

I think, to be a European, you have to be born in a EU country or have parents who are European. :D

Hello Marta. I think that if you are Irish you will have an Irish passport and if you had an English passport you are English. If I was from Ireland and I moved to America I would consider my self Irish/American. To be a European i think it means to have a connection with Europe e.g. you are American and your parents come from Europe. In my personal opinion, even though Norway isnt part of the E.U., i dont think of you any less of as a European Citizen than I think my self.

Hello I read your message and my opinion is that no matter where you are you’re still from you own country. Even if you get the citizenship of another country you should still be considered a citizen of your home country.

Some of my relatives emigrated to the USA in the 1920′s, and just one of them ever returned to Norway. Still after many years they felt like Norwegians, but they also showed respect to their new homeland and loved it and served it. We live in our home countries, belong to a larger unit (EU) in one way or other, so I think we will have different feelings for our own place than for our neighbour countries. The closer you are connected to a place, the more feelings you would have to this place. This does not mean that we are, or should be hostile to each other. On the contrary, through history we have learned that cooperation secures and promotes peace. A responsible citizen should be a person who helps, shares and promotes the best for our communities.

    Dear Marta,
I think to be an EU citizen means that you have to be born in a country in the EU. I think even if you were born in the EU but have parents that aren’t from the EU, you’re still an EU citizen. Even though Norway isn’t in the EU, I don’t think Norwegians are treated differently because they aren’t in the EU. I still see ye as friends and and it doesn’t matter whether or not you’re in the EU.
    Mairéad :)

I think I pretty much share the same thoughts as you do. I don’t think that a passport or a sheet of paper changes who you are, and I think that it is the person inside who determins who you are in the end.
If I moved to America, I would still think of me as a norwegian, but if I decided to stay in America and live there for the rest of my life, I think that the society around me and my surroundings would change me bit by bit.
