School and Democracy

School democracy

What we wanted to know

We wanted to examine different parts of school life. We concentrated on enviroment and school democracy and interwieved our closest neighbours about the environment. In the next part we examined our school democracy. It is important that we have democratic bodies at school, so we know later that it is important to say what we mean and that we can be heard.

The Class Council

That means that the class can say their opinion to different matters. That is very important. There is a leader and a second leader, a boy and a girl. If the class wants to do something special the leader and the second leader write it down, and they talk about it in the pupils’ council.

The Pupils’ Council

The pupils’ council is the highest body for the pupils. Elected representitives from the classes are members in this body. They discuss matters in the school. They have a meeting once every month. They only can influence, they can’t decide anything.

Parents Council Working committee (FAU)

Parents Council is one of the bodies in the school. They are chosen by the parents. They have meetings four to five times in the year. In FAU they talk about what the pupils want to have in the school, what they are allowed to have in school like mobiles and candy. In each class (1-2, 3-4, 5-7 and 8-10) they have two representatives. In bigger schools you only have one age-group in each class. They can also give recommendation to the headmistress and teachers.

Coordinating Committee

The Coordinating Committee is the highest body at the school. The members in this committee are two pupils, two-three teachers, two-four parents, a politician from the municipality and some of the others who work at school. They discuss matters in the school. They can decide how they are going to spend some of the money. They meet around 5 times a year. The politician is chosen from the council of the municipality. The parents are from FAU (see above). The teachers are chosen by the teachers to be in the coordinating committee. The pupils are the leaders in the pupils’ council.
